Despite the Cleveland Browns’ season being over, there never seems to be a dull moment. We’ve had firings of coaches, players getting hurt, and a whole bunch of other little things in between. Let’s take a look at some of these stories as the Browns enter this off-season.
1st and goal: Deshaun Watson reinjuries Achilles; Career could be over
Last Monday, Browns general manager Andrew Berry announced that Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson had a setback in his recovery of the Achilles tendon. At the time, he wouldn’t go beyond stating that. Then, on Friday, we found out that Watson re-tore his Achilles tendon. This type of injury is already severe enough, and with it happening again within a three-month window, it could be a career-ending injury.
Now there is speculation as to how the injury could’ve happened if he was still recovering.
If it is discovered that the injury occurred without Watson properly taking care of his injury by following protocol for recovery, Cleveland could be looking at getting out of some of the guaranteed money they gave him so stay tuned!
2nd and goal: Mike Vrabel leaves to become head coach of the New England Patriots
It was thought for a while that Browns coaching consultant Mike Vrabel who once was the head coach of the Tennessee Titans wanted to become a head coach somewhere in the NFL again. Well, that didn’t take very long as he interviewed and was hired by the New England Patriots over the weekend.
Fans and some analysts of the team had hoped that Vrabel might stay here in Cleveland and maybe even take over for a struggling Kevin Stefanski after a porous 3-14 season.
Now the question will be if Vrabel hires any current Browns coaches like special teams coach Bubba Ventrone who’s been criticized quite a bit this season as the Browns special team play was bad. The other coach could be Tommy Rees who worked as the Browns tight end coach and with the passing game. Vrabel might consider him for his offensive coordinator position with the Patriots.
Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey was fired by the Browns this week after the hellish season. Rees also interviewed already for this opening so we’ll have to see where Rees lands.
3rd and goal: The Browns have the No. 2 pick in NFL Draft
The Browns ended up getting the No. 2 draft pick for the upcoming NFL draft this April. There are several options for the team at this point to consider. Will Cleveland hold onto that draft pick or will they trade it away to gain more draft picks?
With the recent news of the Watson re-injury. The team might take one of the top quarterback prospects in either Cam Ward out of the University of Miami or Shedeur Sanders of Colorado. Both are potential stars in the making, but they could also turn out to be busts in the league. No outstanding quarterbacks are coming out of the collegiate ranks that scream “star”.
Many here in Cleveland think that the Browns will try to snag a veteran quarterback and use them as some type of bridge quarterback to any future quarterback that Cleveland may draft either now or later.
Kirk Cousins, who currently is the backup with the Atlanta Falcons could be a potential option. With the emergence of quarterback Michael Penix in Atlanta, Cousins could request out of Atlanta in a trade or release. He once worked with Stefanski when they were both with the Minnesota Vikings.
From what Andrew Berry said earlier in the week, the quarterback room could look different next season so be prepared for anything at this point.
4th and goal: Cleveland will head to London next season
On Friday, it was announced that the Browns would be one of the teams traveling to London England to play one of their games in this upcoming 2025 season.
A year ago, it was thought that the Browns were going to be traveling to Brazil to play a game, but that never came about. Now the NFL has announced the Browns will indeed play in England.
The last time the Browns played in London was in 2017 when they played the Minnesota Vikings and lost. Interestingly, Kevin Stefanski was part of the coaching staff of that Vikings team.
Cleveland originally had nine home games so now one of those games will be played across the pond.
