The Browns have made their decision as to who will start at quarterback for their first preseason game this Thursday at home against the New Orleans Saints, and it may come as a bit of a shock.
Brock Osweiler will get the first chance to be the man under center for the Browns, beating out Cody Kessler as well as rookie DeShone Kizer.
Coach Hue Jackson made the announcement on Monday, and while Osweiler will get the first crack for the Browns, that doesn’t mean he will be the QB for the season opener next month at home on September 10th against the Steelers.
Osweiler went 10-of-16 passing for 94 yards and leading two field-goal drives in four series of Friday’s ‘Brown and Orange’ scrimmage at First Energy Stadium.
None of the three quarterbacks were very impressive in the scrimmage, but Jackson stated that it comes down to running the offense in an effective manner.
“At this stage in the evaluation process of our quarterbacks, we are going to have Brock start the preseason opener against the Saints on Thursday night,” Jackson said in a statement.
“A lot goes into our evaluation but it’s always going to be about efficiently and effectively running the offense. You want your starter to be able to do that despite any circumstance. Brock hasn’t really gotten any first team reps and this will give him that chance. We look forward to seeing what he can do with this opportunity throughout the week and against the Saints.
