St. Ignatius’ Holy War rematch against St. Edward was not looking bright for the Wildcats when they finished the first quarter trailing 12-4.
The Wildcats quickly recovered in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 24-11, shifting the momentum that was maintained for the rest of the game as St. Ignatius pulled out a 52-44 win over St. Edward.
“We were playing slow,” Wildcats coach Cam Joyce said after the win.
I thought once we got the tempo going, speed it up. We got some easy baskets; get some stops. It gave us some confidence.”

The confidence turned into a 7-0 run to start and 15-3 run to close out the second quarter for St. Ignatius, which was capped off with a buzzer-beater from Freshman Calvin Little. They led 28-23.

The last time St. Ignatius (12-4) played St. Edward (11-2), the Eagles hung 84 points on them, almost double to what they had the second time around.
The Wildcats were monsters on the glass and in the paint, out rebounding St. Edward 41-22. They often held the Eagles to one possession and dominated the offensive glass with 16 offensive rebounds.
The rebounding was at its most lopsided in the second half. St. Ignatius held a 29-14 rebounding advantage, 16-3 in the third quarter.
“The first game was probably what killed us. Their shooting and second opportunities,” Senior Wildcat Henry Raynor said.
“Tonight, everybody rebounded. Guards, bigs. [There are] no defensive possessions off, because second chance points are the game in games like this when it’s close.”
Raynor led by example with his hustle. Even though he scored nine points, Raynor was St. Ignatius’ glass-eater with 15 rebounds (eight offensive rebounds), and four blocks, three of which came in the fourth quarter.

“Sometimes, if scoring is not working for you, you can do something else… and (Raynor) did that,” coach Joyce said.
“He was a scorer, he struggled tonight, but he defended well. He got rebounds, he got blocks. He contributed in other ways. The game is not all about scoring and he showed you that tonight.”
