The strong spring for Indians starter Shane Bieber continued on Thursday afternoon, as the Tribe completed a 2019 Cactus League sweep (3 games) of the Colorado Rockies, winning 9-3 at Goodyear Ballpark.
Bieber threw five no-hit innings (5.0IP, 2BB, 8SO) and has allowed just one run over his four starts (2-1, 0.64 ERA, 14.0IP, 3H, 2BB, 17SO).
The offense got two big blows, a two-run blast from catcher Roberto Perez (1-for-3, HR two RBI) and a grand slam from Daniel Johnson, who put the Indians up 9-0 in the 6th.
Johnson, who was acquired this offseason from the Nationals, is tied for the team lead in RBI (9) and has five extra-base hits (2 2B, 3B, 2HR).
Jordan Luplow broke open a scoreless game with a bases-clearing 3-run double in the 4th inning, and DH Hanley Ramirez (2-3, R) recorded his first multi-hit game of the spring and has now hit safely in his last four games, batting .417 (5-12, 2 2B, 4RBI, R) over that span.
Tribe relievers held the Rockies to four additional hits with Oliver Perez and Dan Otero each throwing scoreless innings in the victory.
Friday the Indians will be on the road as they will travel to Surprise, Arizona to take on the Texas Rangers at 4:05pm.
Carlos Carrasco (1-0, 6.00) is scheduled to make his second start of the spring against righty Jason Hammel for the Rangers (1-0, 1.93).
Friday’s game will be broadcast on WTAM 1100 and the Indians Radio Network.
