SOLON, Ohio – The drama was so thick you could cut it with a knife tonight as the Bee’s clung to the lead long enough to escape with a 5-4 victory over Solon and advance in the GCC tournament.
Medina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when they played small ball to perfection after a leadoff double by Peterson. Chris Fryer followed the Peterson double with a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move him over to third. Peterson would then come in to score on a passed ball to Jordan Fultz. He (Fultz) then would single and eventually come around to score on a John Curtis RBI single.
The Bee’s would tack one more on in the top of the third inning, it could have been more but the inning ended with runners on base after a terrible called third strike on Alfano. It was a call so bad that Stevie Wonder even disagreed with it.
The Bee’s used some incredible defense to keep the Comets at bay, including a beautiful barehanded stop in the bottom of the third by third by Cade Pipoly, to keep it 3-0 after three innings.
It was 3 – 1 headed into the final inning when all holy heck broke loose and things got dicey. The Bee’s scored two more in the top of the inning to lead 5 – 1 with three outs left to obtain for the victory. The runs came in on a rally started by a Cade Pipoly single, followed by a Winters single, a Peterson intentional walk and another single, this time by Chris Fryer.
The rally showed a lot of heart and even more focus by the Bee’s because the inning had started off on a lousy called third strike on Dillon Munoz. It was so clearly a ball that the three blind mice even had a few things to say after the blown call.
The Comets had one last ray of hope in the bottom of the seventh, as a small rally brought the score to 5-2, then back to back bases loaded walks made it 5-4 and had everyone taking their blood pressure pills at a double dosage. The final out would come on a strikeout and the Bee’s won 5-4 in a thriller to advance.
