Barons Roll Past Johnnies in Non-Conference Outing

By: Logan Kelleher

The Buckeye Valley Girls Basketball team played a great game, with a final score of 67-25 against the visiting Johnstown-Monroe Johnnies.

Starting off strong, the Barons achieved a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, fueled by good defensive play, which led to opportunities for scoring. Morgan Scowden and Lisa Leienberger had eight and six points a piece by the end of the quarter, while Alaina Radcliffe and Hannah Cowan added four and two.

After the game, Buckeye Valley coach Cole Stoudt had nothing but positive remarks on how his team played tonight.

“We went out and were definitely the more aggressive team,” Stoudt said.

The aggressive play continued into the second quarter, with the Barons extending their lead. The halftime score was 36-5, with Leienberger leading all scorers with 10 points, while Ashley Abner and Lauren Layman had two and three points respectively to get points on the board for the Johnnies.

The Barons maintained control of the second half, something Coach Stoudt mentioned after the game.

“We had a game earlier in the year where we had a big lead at halftime and then we ended up only winning by 11 or 12, but tonight we were able to still go out and win the second half,” he said.

They did win the second half, and were winners when the final buzzer sounded.

Morgan Scowden finished the game with 17 points for the Barons, leading all scorers, with Lisa Leienberger adding 14. Lauren Hursey had six to lead the Johnnies, with Ashley Abner and Lauren Layman each adding five.

The Barons now advance to 6-4 (3-2), but get to rest, as they do not play again until Jan. 3, a game at Lakewood. The Johnnies fall to 3-5 (0-4), with their next game being played tomorrow as they will play Big Walnut at home.
