The Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets nearly pulled off a huge upset over cross-town rival John Carrol University. BW held a 10-3 lead going into the 4th quarter, only to give up 14 straight points to the Blue Streaks of John Carrol.
The game was a defensive struggle; the teams combined for six turn overs and less than 500 yards of total offense. Junior running back Austin Smith lead the Yellow Jacket offense for the second straight week, rushing for 66 yards and the teams’ only touchdown.
Senior quarterback Robbie Plagens struggled to get the passing attack going, completing just three passes on 15 attempts, good for 26 yards.
John Carrol also lacked an offensive presence, scoring just one offensive touchdown off of a short end zone pass from quarterback Anthony Moeglin to wide out Marshall Howell.
Most notable from the Blue Streaks were the two running backs Sam Kukura and Ro Golphin. The duo combined for 233 yards on the ground, but failed to find the end zone.
The Blue Streaks scored all of their points in the second half, capped off by a fumble recovery in the end zone by defensive back Jimmy Thomas to put John Carrol up 17-10 with 2:54 remaining. Carrol went on to win by that score.
The loss puts Baldwin Wallace at 1-1 on the year. The Yellow Jackets face an even tougher test next week, as they match up against reigning national champion Mount Union University.
The game will be at home at George Finne Stadium on Saturday, September 24th. Kickoff is at 6:30.
