In his first seven starts, Kosar had two games in which he threw for less than 100 yards, throwing for 84 yards in the 14-7 loss to the Redskins, and 96 yards the next week in a 10-9 loss at Three Rivers Stadium to the Steelers.
He came back the next week against the Bengals in a 27-10 loss and threw for 229 yards, which was the most yards he threw for in any game of the 1985 season.
In his first seven games Bernie threw for a total of 857 yards – an average of 122 yards per contest.
As for Mayfield, he’s thrown for 1783 yards already through seven games, again a reminder of just how offenses have changed in the NFL in the past three decades.
Mayfield threw for 342 yards in just his second start against the Ravens, and if you look back, Kosar didn’t have a 300-pluss yard game until his second season, and that came in 1986 against the Miami Dolphins, throwing for 401 yards in a win in week 10 against the Dolphins.
The lowest game Mayfield has had throwing the ball came against the Steelers three weeks back, as that day he threw for 180 yards against Pittsburgh.
