AVON – This game recap is brought to you by the B.A. Sweetie Candy Company, located at 6770 Brookpark Road, Cleveland, Ohio. The Avon Eagles (2-0-0) played host to the Eagles of North Olmsted (1-1-0) tonight. Avon coming in trying to find their identity offensively behind Senior QB Matt Kelly and RB Mason McLemore. Avon took a step forward tonight defeating North Olmsted 45-10 in an electrified stadium.
North Olmsted arrived prepared for the battle that would ensue however, the misalignments and poor kicking game made it very difficult to produce much against Avon, one of Ohio’s most winningest high school football programs.
Avon pounded the run and aired it out several times racking up 42 points in the first half.
There was no shortage of offensive play from North Olmsted though. The running attack from Senior Christopher Jones and QB Brandon Maximovich seemed to keep the ball moving for most of the game until turn overs and a big defensive line of Avon made it impossible to capitalize.
Having a commanding lead going into half time, the Avon Eagles came out and were held scoreless by North Olmsted in the 3rd quarter with sophomore, Ryan Maloy who complete 46.7% of his passes coming into tonight.
North Olmsted’s coach wanted to see who had it in them to come out and fight in the second half. Unfortunately, the 3 points in the first half and the 7 that would come in the fourth left coaches with a continued effort to produce. The coach also went on to say that the same problems from last week loomed over their heads again tonight.
The Defensive coordinator for Avon gave credit to the Hall of Fame coaching staff of North Olmsted. He also went on to say that they prepared for the size of The Eagles and their run game, coming with the mind set to fill the gaps and step up to the challenge. “The kids did that…. And we did that well, except for a few plays.”
Avon’s Head Coach, Mike Elder, spoke on Mason McLemore saying that “Their belief is that there is only so much tread on a tire, so why wear it out when you don’t have to? The kids are not selfish and they understand that belief which also gave the opportunity for kids that did not get to play in the first half a chance to get into the game. It also”
He also feels that it takes time to create a passing game, but his coaches are smart and have the know how. Evidence of which shows in Avon also having some guys to watch in the college ranks with Jarryd dressing at Mount Union and Sam Gerak who is committed to Northwestern for his domination of the offensive line and hid leadership on the team.
Avon plays Midview next week and North Olmsted’s coach seems to think that this division will end up with Avon and Midview in the finals. I asked Avon’s coach was it too early to speculate and he said, “the teams focus is the game at hand.” Elder also went on to say, “next week’s meeting with Midview has become quite a rivalry with Midview winning two years in a row and before that Avon had beat them 4 years in a row.
“Rivalries happen because of parody… ya know. they’ve beaten us and we’ve beaten them…. and they’ve gotten the best of us lately. We’re just excited to have the opportunity to play them again. It’s been a long wait to get to play them, so we’re excited!” ~Mike Elder
Fans were happy and wanting to celebrate the victory and it was all smiles tonight. “The Nest” was rocking with cheers, chants and music. Here are a couple of friends that were rooting on the home team just before halftime.
