BROOKLYN, OHIO – The number-one seed in Baron Cup II action the Avon Eagles were good enough on Friday afternoon, advancing to the title game on Sunday with a 6-2 win over the game NDCL Lions.
The game looked like a runaway midway though the first period for the Eagles, who were 10-0-0 in league play, as they scored three goals in 73 seconds to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Lions though fought hard as a three-seed, as they made it interesting with a goal with 5:25 to play in the second period, and then had a two-man advantage that they just couldn’t convert on later in the period that could have made things even more interesting entering the final 15 minutes.
NDCL went 5-4-1 in White South play in the GCHSHL, and defeated two-seed Benedictine on Tuesday night to advance to Friday’s affair with the Eagles.
The Eagles will await the winner of Chagrin Falls and Olmsted Falls for the first to hoist the Baron Cup II trophy on Sunday afternoon in a 3pm game.
After a competitive first 6 plus minutes, the Eagles blitzed the Lions with three quick goals, taking the lead that they would never lose.
The first goal came with 8:56 to play and went to Leo Goetz, scoring his 4th of the season. The assists went to Shane Docherty and Alex Provenza.
It took the Eagles 63 seconds to score their second goal of the night, as senior forward Zach Zwiercki, who led the White League in scoring during league play, found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Keeping up the pressure, Zwiercki needed just 10 ticks of the clock, as he won the face-off and raced to the net, sliding one past Lions goalie Bobby Zoul to make it 3-0.
The two teams remained scoreless the remainder of the period, as the first ended with the Eagles leading it 3-0.
Both the Lions and Eagles played a physical second period, with both teams getting chances but the Eagles controlling most of the tempo and play.
NDCL though took advantage of one of their rare chances of the period, as senior forward CJ Natale took a shot at the net that trickled in, making it a 3-1 game with 5:25 to play in the second.
The Eagles killed two huge penalties at the end of the period, maintaining a two-goal edge as the second period came to a conclusion.
Avon put the game away with three goals in the third, Docherty scoring all three goals in the frame for a hat trick to put a wrap on the win.
His first goal came with 12:43 to play, then the Lions again made it interesting, scoring a goal at the 10:59 mark to make it 4-2.
Senior forward Jaret Cipollone got the goal for the Lions, Sam Cameratta and Natale got the two assists for the Lions.
Docherty found the net two times in a span of 24 seconds to seal the deal, helping the Eagles skate to the 6-2 victory and a shot at the title on Sunday at 3pm.
The Lions outshot the Eagles 35-33 in the game.
