Parma, OHIO – In Tuesday night’s high school hockey game between the Avon Eagles, and Parma Redmen held at Forestwood Ice Rink in Parma, Ohio, fans were able to witness some great offensive hockey. Being that my brother is actually a starting offensive player for Parma, Joey Gallo, I did my best to report on this game as if I were an unbiased viewer, just looking to watch a great hockey game!
Early into the game, both teams came out with their sticks at full throttle. The game itself wasn’t filled with too many penalties because both teams were playing a little less physically aggressive and more aggressive towards the puck. It wasn’t until 39.9 seconds left in the 1st period that Avon would take the lead with a goal scored by #19, Zach Zwierecki.
Quickly about Zwierecki, he had a total of 3 goals in last night’s game against Parma which earned him a hat-trick very early into the season. After his first goal, he would then go on to score his second with 9:43 left in the second period and his final goal with 3:08 left in the second.
Following the goal scored by Avon’s forward, Parma attacked back with #22, Joey Gallo scoring his only goal of the game with .2 seconds left in the first period. It looked as if the first would be a shutout 1-0, but Gallo found an opening and took advantage of it right before the buzzer could sound.
Following Zwierecki’s first, second period goal with the score being 2-1, Parma once again would tie the game with a goal by #13, Tommy Arthur, assisted by #16, Sebastian Root. This specific goal caught my eye when Sebastian shot the puck a little left and Arthur stuck out his stick to poke it in, hitting the top left corner of the net. With Parma once again tying the game, Zwierecki would help Avon take a lead with 3:08 to make the score 3-2, and to make matters worse on Parma’s end, Avon’s #2, Shane Docherty scored with 2:43 left in the second, leaving the score at 4-2 until the third.
Scoring wise, the third period started off great but would prove to end uneventful. With 13:49 left in the period, #13, Tommy Arthur scored assisted by #5, Matt Higginbotham. The Redmen began to get themselves back into the game until there was 9:21 left and Avon’s #2, Simon Wiersma scored, assisted by #7, Zach South.
All in all, this contest was very competitive and both teams ended with an outstanding amount of shots on goal. Avon shot a total of 43 shots, and Parma ended with 31. After this game, Avon is now (2-0-0) in the league standings and Parma having a rougher start at (1-2-0), now on a 2 game loss streak.
Parma and Avon are scheduled to meet again in an upcoming tournament this weekend on Sat. December 10, at 5:00 P.M in Cleveland Hts.
