BEREA, OHIO– On a cold and rainy evening at Jim Tressel Field, George Finney Stadium in the campus of Baldwin Wallace University, the end of the 2017 high school football regular season came to an end, and the beginning of what could be a dream ending begins.
The Avon Eagles completed a perfect 10-0 season by thoroughly smashing the Berea-Midpark Titans 63-35 in a game that featured 1060 combined offensive yardage.
Star quarterback Ryan Maloy went 17-of-21, for 254 yards and three touchdowns. He also had eight carries for another 80 yards and three more scores. Led by Maloy, the Eagles scored early and often and never were threatened.
This night was destined to be a dogfight with rain falling all game long. Turnovers and miscues were expected and none of that materialized. There were very few dropped passes by either team and both took care of the football. Neither team turned the ball over.
Avon took the opening kickoff and it took them all of 10 seconds to get on the board when Maloy found wide receiver Chris Mullins on a go route down the left sideline, and 80 yards later, had a quick 7-0 lead.
The Titans came right back on their first possession and QB Trevor Bycznski, last week’s NEOSI Player of the Week, engineered a nine-play 93-yard score with a TD pass to WR David Browning from 19 yards to tie it at 7.
A 39-yard TD run by Maloy, followed by a 48-yard run by RB Tony Eberhardt, and another hook up with Mullins from 38 yards out gave the Eagles a 27-7 lead after a quarter.
This one was over.
Two more TD runs by Maloy in the second quarter and a Bycznski 38- yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Holland made the score 41-14 at the half.
Both teams traded scores in the third quarter, which saw the game use a running clock on three occasions, only to have the Titans score and get back to regulation timekeeping.
Bycznski hooked up with wide receiver Luis Vega for scores of 24 and 19 yards, and another to Browning of 14 yards. Mixed in was blast up the middle from Eberhardt for a 68-yard score, and Aaron Endrizal for Avon with a one-yard run. Carson Gosselin ended the scoring with a 34-yard FG.
Avon awaits their first round opponent next week at home in the OHSAA Division II playoffs while Berea-Midpark ends their season with a 4-6 record.
