Avon, Oh – In a game that was tight throughout, the Eagles of Avon scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Glenville Tarblooders 24-16. Throughout the night, the Eagles were able to move the ball, and control the line of scrimmage. They would get stalled at times by Glenville’s defense, but for the most part…. Avon dominated this game.
Both teams’ first drive of the night were stalled by interceptions. Glenville’s QB Ruel Tomlinson was picked off on the game’s third play, by Avon’s D lineman. On Avon’s first drive, QB Nolan Good was picked off by Glenville’s DB Bryce West in the end zone. After the interception though, Good settled down and had himself an impressive night. On his next drive, the Eagles Jr QB led a drive and finished it off with an 11-yard Touchdown to RB Jakorion Caffey.
After stopping the next Glenville drive, the Eagles got another touchdown throw from Good, this time to Cole Kepner to go up 14-0 in the second quarter. But as halftime approached, and knowing they needed to score, Glenville responded with a drive backed up at their own 6-yard line. The drive was filled with penalties, but Glenville found a way to overcome and score on a 45-yard pass from Tomlinson to Jamari Townsend, and then converted the 2-point conversion to cut the lead to 14-8.
After Glenville was able to find success late in the second quarter, the game tightened up for both teams in the third. Both teams struggled to move the ball as Avon couldn’t really get their star RB Caffey any room. For the Tarblooders, penalties, specifically false starts, were drive and momentum killers. There were 5 false starts called in the second quarter, and 4 in the third. The teams battled in the third, but the score stayed the same.
The fourth quarter started with a quick score from Glenville. Tomlinson made a huge run for 52 yards before stepping out of bounds. Then two plays later found Damarion Witten for a 33-yard touchdown score. Glenville again converted the two-point conversion and took the lead. But Avon marched down the field, and kicked a FG to retake the lead 17-16 with 6:51 to go. That’s when Avon coach dialed up as gutsy a call you can make, calling and recovering an onside kick. Recovered by the kicker who watched the ball get right past the required 10 yards, Avon got the ball at the Glenville 34. Nolan Good was able to escape some pressure and get 18 yards on the ground, and then found Paul Leftrict for an 18-yard touchdown. The last drive for Glenville, once again the false starts stalled their effort to come back and after Tomlinson’s pass was incomplete on 4-and 25, Avon was able to go into victory formation. 24-16 Avon.
