Yesterday, the Arena Football League (AFL) tweeted that they will have big announcements coming on July 18th. It has been known that the AFL is wanting to start their comeback season in the spring of 2024, but no other information is known at this time, so the rumors are rampant of what these big announcements will be.
How many teams will there be? What cities will the teams represent? Will Cleveland have a team for the first time since before the pandemic?
In my opinion, the league cannot come back unless they have a full list of teams, not the handful of teams they had before the league closed down. They also need to have teams again in the cities that have AFL tradition and experience, along with a fan base that will definitely come back and support the team every single game. Teams like the New Orleans Voodoo, Arizona Rattlers, Philadelphia Soul, and the Iowa Barnstormers should be included.
As far as the possibility of Cleveland getting the Gladiators back at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, I think it is a very strong possibility due to the fact that Cleveland supported the Gladiators pretty well every season, including the 2014 season in which the team made the Arena Bowl, before losing to the juggernaut Arizona Rattlers.
For those who are not familiar with the AFL, the game is played on an indoors 50-yard field that is surrounded by padded hockey style walls, along with goalposts that are surrounded by nets which those nets are considered in play so the ball that bounces off of them is still live. Fast moving football, lively fanbases, and family friendly prices. A great combination!
