Mentor – Coming off of a dominating victory over Avon Lake on Thursday, Amherst Steele continued their positive momentum as they swept a doubleheader over the Mentor Cardinals on Saturday.
In fact, they defeated the Cardinals 7-4 in game one, and 7-1 in game two, to move to 5-1 on the season.
“We knew coming in, Mentor is a great program,” said Amherst Steele head coach Lacey Reichert. “They hit, they have good pitching, they’re just solid. We knew we had to match that and that we had to play solid all the way around. So we had to put the ball in play, get hits. Credit to our girls. They put together good at bats pretty much all day long and it showed.”
As coach Reichert alluded to, Amherst Steele hit well in both games. In the first game, the Comets were led by freshman Makenna Dorobek and senior Sierra Dorobek.
Sierra Dorobek pitched a complete game in which she only allowed 2 earned runs. In addition, she was 2-4 at the plate including a third inning home run. Makenna Dorobek also had a great game at the plate as she was also 2-4 in game one.
Amherst Steele’s bats stayed hot in game 2 as they scored seven runs on 12 hits. They were led by Abigail Bertke, Kristen Kelley, Emma Nagy and Lacie Stottlemire, who combined for 10 hits in 15 at bats.
“We played as a team, we hit the ball hard, we made plays when we needed them, and we scored when we needed to,” said Nagy. “First game I know some of us didn’t come out swinging as strong as the second game so I know we all had to pick it up. We got in, saw the pitching, we adjusted, and made the hits.”
Added Stottlemire, “I feel like we had our fire coming from that past Midview game, and the thoughts from that game really keep us going.”
In addition to the excellent hitting in game 2, freshman pitcher Leah Sprague turned in an excellent performance, only allowing one run on four hits.
Amherst Steele returns to the diamond on Monday as they face North Olmsted.
Mentor also will be on the Diamond Monday as they take on Walsh Jesuit.
