Special to NEOSI from Donte Durham
The University of Akron’s football team has their hands full at InfoCision Stadium as they trail Western Michigan 27-0 at the half.
The Broncos got off to a fast start as they scored on their 1st 4 possessions to take a 27-0 lead.
They led 14-0 after the 1st and seemed unstoppable for much of the half. In the first quarter alone Western Michigan outgained Akron 204 to 14 as they ran 31 plays to the Zips 6. Western Michigan has had everything going as the 24th ranked team in the country has been able to pass and run at will.
The Zips have had opportunities but QB Tra’Von Chapman has not been able to make Western Michigan pay. Overthrown passes and bad decisions have crippled the Zips normally dangerous passing game.
This, and maybe the Kent State game, are times when starter Thomas Woodson is missed. Woodson is the better passer out of the two while Chapman can run.
For the half the Zips have been outgained 354 to 120. Western Michigan has 212 on the ground and 142 through the air.
One of the few bright spots was Western Michigan committing their 1st turnover of the year in the 2nd quarter. They had the longest streak since 2004.
The Zips deferred to start the game and will need to get things going quickly if they want to have any chance in this one.
