It’s never easy to win games on the road and for the Licking Heights Lady Hornets JV team they got an early season test in grit and determination and proved the victor in a 33-31 comeback win over the Lakewood Lancers.
Described by the players as an “astonishing” win, the team regrouped after a first half that saw them go down 21-7. But fighting back was on the players’ minds and they were able to close the large deficit to 24–21 by the end of the third quarter. The team used a tenacious press defense to battle back.
In the 4th quarter, Alaila Thompson knocked down a huge three-pointer and Tori Hill and Sha Little got a few buckets to drop, and Little hit a big free throw to extend their final lead to 33-31.
It took an all-team effort to pull off the big comeback. Not all of the Lady Hornets scored in the game but played great defense like Mariah Waters, Sabrina Bauers, and Victoria Harvey.
As for scoring in the game. Hill led all scorers with 14 points. Janessa Hughes knocked down 6 points. Evelyn Caruso added 4 points. Thompson, Little and Brooklyn Hall scored 3 points each.
With the win, the Lady Hornets have started the season on a 4-0 win streak.
Up next will be two holiday home game specials against Licking Valley on Tuesday, December 12th, and Johnstown on Friday, December 15th.
