A Look at What’s Happening This Week with the Cleveland State Sports Teams

MEN’S BASKETBALL
•    CSU (0-1) plays two games this week, including the home opener on Tuesday (Nov. 17) against Malone at 7:00 pm. The Vikings also travel to Rhode Island at 7:30 pm on Saturday (Nov. 21).
•    The Vikings dropped their season opener, 65-53, on Saturday night to Akron. Andre Yates had 13 points and nine rebounds, while Demonte Flannigan tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
•    The Vikings (0-1) will continue the 2015-16 season this weekend, hosting Evansville on Wednesday, November 18 and traveling to Belmont on Sunday, November 22.
•    Cleveland State opened the season against Bucknell last week, falling to the Bison, 59-57.
•    Khayla Livingston and Shadae Bosley led the Vikings in the season-opener – Livingston with a career-high 19 points along with five steals and four rebounds, and Bosley with 11 points and nine boards.

CROSS COUNTRY
•    CSU wrapped up the 2015 season last weekend, participating in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
•    The Vikings were paced by the duo of Ashlyn Woods and Samantha Butterbaugh – who have been CSU’s top two finishers during eight races this season.

FENCING
•    The Vikings are out of action until the Northwestern Duals on Jan. 31.
•    The men’s team went 7-1 at the Case Western Duals on Saturday with Matt Gebbert winning 25 of his 26 bouts with his lone loss to Michigan’s top fencer. Sarah Mok went undefeated to lead the women.

MEN’S SOCCER
•    CSU concluded the season with a 9-8-2 record after a 1-0 overtime win against Detroit in the first round of the league tournament before falling 1-0 in overtime to Oakland in the semifinals.
•    Hesham Hammouda scored the game-winning goal against Detroit and was named to the all-tournament team with Sergio Manesio.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
•    CSU (3-2) is back in action this weekend, hosting the Magnus Cup from Friday through Sunday. The preliminaties start at 9:00 am each day with the finals at 5:00 pm.
•    The Vikings dropped a 140.5-78.5 dual at Ohio State on Thursday. Tommi Wolst won the 100 IM in 50.69, while Philipp Sikatzki captured the 50 butterful in 22.03. He also had two runner-up finishes.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
•    CSU (2-6) is back in action this weekend, hosting the Magnus Cup from Friday through Sunday. The preliminaties start at 9:00 am each day with the finals at 5:00 pm.
•    The Vikings fell at Ohio State on Thursday, 152.5-66.5. Molly McNamara captured the 100 butterfly in 56.04, and also won the 100 IM with a time of 1:00.35.

VOLLEYBALL
•    Cleveland State finished the regular season going 2-1 over the final week of action – owning a 24-6 overall record and a 13-3 mark in Horizon League play.
•    With their 3-1 win at UIC on Friday, the Vikings captured the 2015 Horizon League Regular Season Title – their third regular season title in program history.
•    The Vikings also earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament – which will be hosted at Cleveland State Friday, November 20 – Sunday, November 22.
•    Cleveland State will open play at the Horizon League Tournament with a semifinal contest at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 21.

WRESTLING
•    CSU (4-1) is back in action on Friday (Nov. 20) at 7:00 pm vs. Eastern Michigan in the Wolstein Center.
•    The Vikings went 3-1 at the Ohio Duals on Saturday to finish third. CSU defeated Toledo (54-0), Baldwin Wallace (27-12) and Tiffin (28-9) before falling to Lake Erie, 18-17, in the semifinals.

    •    Nick Montgomery (149, 3-0), Sam Wheeler (197, 4-0) and No. 8 Riley Shaw (HWT, 4-0) all went undefeated for the Vikings.

VIKING OF THE WEEK

2015 VOLLEYBALL TEAM
Horizon League Regular Season Champions

The Cleveland State volleyball team clinched the 2015 Horizon League regular season championship with Friday’s 3-1 win at UIC. It was the third league title for CSU, which also captured regular season crowns in 2009 and 2012. The Vikings finished the regular season with 24 wins, the second highest total over the last 30 years. The 13 League wins were tied for the most in school history for a season.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS

Rob Edwards: The men’s basketball freshman had a strong debut with eight points, five rebounds and four steals in 27 minutes off the bench against Akron.

Matt Gebbert: The men’s fencing sophomore won 25 of his 26 bouts in the saber at the Case Western Duals on Saturday to help CSU win seven of eight matches.

Sergio Manesio: The men’s soccer junior was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year after leading the CSU backline all season.
