The Browns are now left with several options at the eighth position. By the time their pick comes, I’m going to be under the assumption that Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Laremy Tunsil, Jalen Ramsey, Joey Bosa, and DeForest Buckner will be off the board. If one of them falls than I think it’s a no brainer that you go with them.
The realistic options should come down to Ronnie Stanley the OT from Notre Dame, Ezekiel Elliott RB Ohio State, Vernon Hargeaves CB Florida, Myles Jack LB UCLA, Paxton Lynch QB Memphis, and Laquon Treadwell WR Ole Miss.
Of that list, I think all of them will be considered, but I would eliminate Treadwell, Lynch, and Elliott.
While the Browns need a WR, Treadwell doesn’t stand heads and tails above the other WRs and the Browns can pick up one later on. Ezekiel Elliott is another popular pick among fans but I’m not as keen to it as them.
While I agree with Elliott’s talent, I’m not sold on the value and the fit with the rebuilding process. Most people have downgraded the position at RB in the draft and I agree to an extent. I’m not one to say you can’t take a RB in the first round but the return on value going with one in the top ten is not great. In the NFL right now, there is only one RB over 32 years older.
The amount of RBs that make it to 30 isn’t great either. With a rebuilding team, the wear and tear he would take over the next few years before the team gets good leaves maybe four years or so of talent. With the league changing drastically to pass first, the RB position may continue to be devalued although Elliott can block and catch which will help in that regard.
The final reason on Elliott is that I still like Duke Johnson. He is one of the few players that actually can shine for this team. Drafting Elliott makes him a bell cow back and drastically cuts into the amount of touches Duke gets.
Fans tend to get too caught up in the Ohio State hype and bias that they feel they need him more than they should. As I mentioned earlier, I’m not convinced of the QB talent in this draft and would rather have the Browns wait than to draft Paxton Lynch.
