The Browns Have Options at 8 in The NFL Draft – Here’s How They Should Go

Cardale Jones

The Browns are in a rebuilding mode. I may be in the minority on this one, but I don’t believe the Browns even need to take a QB in this draft. Everybody has become so infatuated with getting a QB that people will do whatever to get one and feel they must have one at all times. While that is usually the case, when a team enters rebuilding mode it gives them some flexibility.

Ideally they can get a young QB to build around and start the wheels turning with him. In the Browns case, the team is so bad that QB or not, they should still be picking in the top three next year. When a team drafts a young QB they are stuck committing to them despite the struggles. Blake Bortles did not have a great year his rookie season but there was no talks of them taking another QB.

Teams that went into the second round for guys like Derek Carr and Andy Dalton were still committed to their guy. Manziel sat his almost his entire rookie year so the team would have to stick with him the following year even if they were drafting high.

If the Browns select a QB at any point this year, they will be forced to pass up a QB next year based on that rule with maybe the only exception being if they lock up the first overall pick. While on paper, next year’s class doesn’t seem great, this season entered with Cardale Jones, Connor Cook, and Christian Hackenberg as the top QBs.

Carson Wentz and Paxton Lynch were not even remotely mentioned as first round picks. There’s a lot that can change over next season and a talented QB could emerge that the Browns like more.

This season can be used to start putting quality pieces into the puzzle because it’s going to take a lot of them. While getting a QB off the start would be nice, they shouldn’t feel obligated to. While I hated the RGIII signing, as a former second overall pick, they might as well see if he can emerge to something of a shell of what he was.

If he can, then the Browns might have found a franchise QB, gotten extra picks, and drafted a skilled player at a different position. I hate the QBs in this draft after the top two. In my opinion I would just let them not draft one and go with RGIII and Josh McCown. It’s not glamorous, but a rebuilding process isn’t supposed to be.
