In case you live under a rock, by now you’ve heard the news that the Browns have traded the number two pick and a conditional fourth next year to the Eagles for the eighth pick, a third round pick (no. 77), a fourth round pick (no. 100), a 2017 first round pick, and a 2018 second round pick.
The Browns have now taken themselves out of the Jared Goff and Carson Wentz running while stockpiling picks. This is the first move that I applause the Browns on since announcing Hue Jackson as head coach.
I’ve had my runs on what the Browns should do in the draft throughout the offseason. It started with taking the best player available in a team void of total talent.
Then it was the realization that it is a weak draft and the QBs at the top of the draft can’t be much worse than if they were to draft the best overall player.
The team would finally have its chance to take whatever QB in the draft it desired since Tim Couch. All was looking great and then the Rams messed everything up by trading the house to move up to one. After that trade, the best option was to move back and stockpile picks if they weren’t sold on a QB.
The QBs in this draft to me are nothing special. I would have taken the two QBs last year over them, and while I would not have taken Johnny Manziel over them, I was higher on Teddy Bridgewater coming out than these two. In the world of desperate teams for QBs, the Browns were smart to maximize their haul for some team giving up way too much to get one.
