There’s Plenty of Reasons to Hate the Browns Signing of RGIII – Here’s Just a Few

Robert Griffin III

Finally, there is the size and reliability in looking at QBs. RGIII has dealt with multitudes of injuries including his ACL twice. He does not have the speed that made him dangerous when he was coming out of college. He was rushed back too soon and physically he will never be the same as what he once was. The AFC North is a grueling division filled with tough physical defenses and large QBs.

For comparison, Joe Flacco is 6’6” 245 lbs, Ben Roethlisberger 6’5” 240 lbs, and Andy Dalton is smaller at 6’2” 216 lbs. The Browns possible QBs are Josh McCown 6’4” 218 lbs, Jared Goff 6’4” 215 lbs, Carson Wentz 6’5” 237 lbs, and Robert Griffin III 6’2” 222 lbs.

Griffin is the smallest of the bunch. Wentz, the most likely pick, has the size that fits in with what most of the AFC North QBs are like. The Browns need a durable QB that can take this team to the next level.

All in all, there’s nothing for me to get excited about with the RGIII signing. All the fans keep mentioning how much they like it because it’s high reward with low risk involved but I say it’s counterproductive to everything they’ve been trying to do so far. When a team starts to rebuild, it’s most important to get cornerstone players at major positions that they can build around, particularly at QB.

This is probably the first time since around 2004-2005 that the Browns can go and get possibly the top QB in the draft if they so choose. There are not many times where a team can have its choice of what QB in the entire draft they want. With opportunities so rare it would be a mistake for them to not choose one.

While there has been success of recent day two picks like Derek Carr, Russell Wilson, and Andy Dalton, there is no guarantee for success there either. The Browns should make the most of this rare opportunity and take the top QB. Signing Robert Griffin to maybe play for a half or season or so is just a waste of his time and the young QBs time.

Just let the guy go out and play and if he struggles so what. The team needs to learn and gain the experience so they can make the next jump like Jacksonville and Oakland are seemingly will make. In the end, I feel it’s all about more draft picks for this new regime.

They let all these guys walk for compensation picks. Now they can sign RGIII to trade McCown for a pick and hope that RGIII can redeem some value so they can trade him for a pick. When the team learns that drafting well and keeping those guys around instead of loading up on late round picks, maybe this team will get out of the basement. Everybody that moves in free agency was likely not drafted by someone on his new team so saying that it wasn’t their regimes guy is a poor excuse.

It’s all about getting quality players on the field. Until the Browns do that and stop drafting first round picks that continue to sit on the bench and fail, it’s going to remain a long and painful winter. This latest signing continues to prove that this organization is clueless in what it’s doing. Hopefully in time they can prove they were right but as of right now I can only scratch my head and continue to wonder why.

I’m not for signing a fragile QB who couldn’t take advantage of multiple opportunities in order to get rid of a veteran mentor for your future franchise QB who will now lose valuable playing time and you shouldn’t either.
