BEREA, Ohio – The Cleveland Browns could have a second chance to land quarterback Robert Griffin III. After not being able to work out a trade with the St. Louis Rams to move up to the number two overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the Browns could sign the former Washington Redskins quarterback as a free agent.
According to reports, RG-3 visited the Browns on Saturday. Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports was the first to report about RG-3’s visit with the Browns.
Griffin III is looking to revive his career after being benched by Redskins head coach Jay Gruden last season in favor of Kirk Cousins, who was also selected by Washington in the 2012 NFL Draft. Griffin III was released by the Redskins right before the start of free agency on March 7.
In a report from cleveland.com and Cleveland Plain Dealer Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot, Griffin III met with Executive Vice President Sashi Brown, coach Hue Jackson, Assistant Head coach/offense Pep Hamilton and Vice President of Player Personnel Andrew Berry. The meeting between both sides apparently went very well.
Griffin III has a career record of 14-21 and has completed 63.9% of his passes. RG-3 has thrown for 8,097 yards, with 40 touchdowns and 23 interceptions and has career passer rating is 90.6. RG-3 has also battled knee problems throughout his career including a torn ACL.
Griffin III is the second veteran quarterback the Browns have reportedly been interested in during free agency. The Browns have also been linked to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick who was benched last season in favor of Blaine Gabbert. Kaepernick has also expressed interest in playing for the Browns despite having a new coach in Chip Kelly in San Francisco.
The Browns could offer a third round pick in next month’s NFL draft to the 49ers for Kaepernick, but it remains to be seen if a deal will actually take place.
While the team is expected to use the number two overall pick in next month’s NFL Draft on either Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State or Jared Goff of California, the Browns are looking at all options as they look to find a franchise quarterback to help in the rebuilding process of the football team. The Browns were well represented at Goff’s pro day on Friday. Browns assistant head coach Hamilton even poured water on footballs during Goff’s workout to see how he handles throwing a wet football because he’ll play in all kinds of weather conditions if the Browns select as their quarterback of the future.
As of now, Josh McCown is the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns and could be the opening day starter in 2016 while the future franchise quarterback will learn from the sidelines. Austin Davis is the backup. Both McCown and Davis have two years remaining on their contracts with the Browns.
No matter which direction Jackson and his staff take in regards to the quarterback position, the Browns clearly have quarterback at the top of their list as a position of need and are looking at all options to find the contracts with the Browns.
