To the surprise of just about no one, former Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is now free to sign for any team, as he cleared waivers after being waived by the Browns on Thursday.
If a team would have picked up Manziel, they would have been on the hook for two years of his contract, which would have cost that team $2.173 million.
Many have stated for month that one team that would have interest in Manziel would be the Dallas Cowboys, but it looks like that interest has passed.
The Dallas News reports that ‘America’s Team’ has no desire to take on the distraction of Manziel, and that they won’t be taking a chance on him.
A source said the club has no intention of bringing the former Heisman Trophy winner in for a visit or signing him now that he’s been released by Cleveland. That same source said the Cowboys won’t pursue the quarterback and doesn’t forsee the club having any serious discussions about him, “until he gets his life back in order.”
With still off the field issues and a grand jury issue pending against him, there’s no doubt that teams are very much gun shy about bringing someone with the baggage of Manziel in, and for good reason.
