Winners and Losers of NFL Free Agency After Day 1

Calvin Johnson

Losers:

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles have spent much trying to repair the damage that Chip Kelly has done. They had to include Kiko Alonso in a deal to move up five picks and to get rid of Byron Maxwell’s dreadful contract. I understand his injury history but his potential is still there. While that trade was great for them, having to do undo the damage and the little they get in return hurts. Just ask DeMarco Murray who in order to get rid of his 5 year 40 million dollar deal the Eagles just swapped fourth round picks. That’s not much at all for one of the prized possessions of last offseason. There’s also been some questionable signings. They just gave a lot of money to QBs. I mentioned how Chase Daniel just got way overpaid and they also gave the injured Sam Bradford 22 million guaranteed. I don’t know why they just gave so much money to two QBs. Then they also overpaid for guard Brandon Brooks at 8 million a year. While they are doing a nice job fixing last year’s mess, not getting much of a return and overspending again is not a great start.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns always tend to be a on the loser board whether it’s in a game or in the headlines. The Browns are maybe the biggest loser so far in free agency. Turning to a moneyball approach, the Browns have let their top free agents Alex Mack, Mitchell Schwartz, Tashaun Gipson, and Travis Benjmain all leave. They have signed nobody to replace them either. I feel bad for Carson Wentz or Jared Goff having to come in to a team completely void of talent.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints have always had salary cap problems in recent years. This year they’ve already had to release Marques Colston and Jahri Evans with others still likely to follow. They used the little money they have to give Coby Fleener 5 years 36 million. Probably not the best idea to spend it on figuring they were the worst defense in the NFL.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos were not going to be able to resign all of their free agents but they lost some key ones. With Osweiler going to Houston and Manning retiring the Broncos current starting QB is? Buehler……Buehler…..Buehler……Trevor Siemian from Northwestern. The Broncos also took major hits losing Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan on their defense. It’s a bucking start for the Broncos.

Calvin Johnson

I’m putting Megatron in the losers section because I don’t think he should have retired. At 30 years old he still had playing years left. I think he might be the most gifted athlete in the NFL too as he’s just a total freak of nature. He dealt with nagging injuries of late but an offseason of getting healthy could have done a lot for him to have a better 2017. He’s truly one of the best WRs to play the game but retiring now may make him fall short of the Hall of Fame too while playing another three-four years might have just about guaranteed it.
