3. Addition Without Subtraction
In most cases, an NBA team has to give something up to improve their team mid-season. There aren’t a bunch of talented free-agents waiting to be signed.
With the Chinese regular season ending in early February, it creates an opportunity for NBA teams to add free-agents without having to deal away valuable pieces of their team.
Even if the Cavs could get Koufos from the Kings, they would likely have to give up one of their significant trade pieces. Whether it’s Mozgov, a $10 Million trade exception, or another role-player.
The Cavs can add Oden without giving anyone up, and they have an open roster spot because of a trade earlier in the season involving Joe Harris.
So what’s there to lose? Aside from a league minimum contract that would be a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the Cavs’ payroll.
