5. Jordan McRae + 2019 2nd round pick (via Lakers or Timberwolves) for Salah Mejri
The Dallas Mavericks’ slim chances of somehow climbing up to the eighth-seed all but vanished after the DeMarcus Cousins’ trade. The Mavs were probably already going to be sellers at the deadline to begin with, but this cements it. Quietly, Mejri, a 7-foot-2, 30-year-old center has been playing some solid basketball of late. In the month of February, he’s averaging 5.0 points and 6.4 rebounds, playing 14 minutes per game. He could be a solid piece off the bench to give Tristan Thompson a break.
Mejri posted three impressive games in February, which included 10, 15, and 17 rebound performances. Mejri also has blocked two or more shots in four games this month and that rim protection could be valuable in certain playoff matchups (i.e. Pistons, Raptors). The Mavericks will likely be targeting young players to try to build from the ground up and McRae could find a decent amount of playing time there behind Seth Curry. Mejri is 30 years old, which doesn’t exactly correlate with the idea of rebuilding.
Again, there’s a good chance none of these trades will happen, but these are some players worth keeping an eye on leading up to the deadline.
