5 Observations From the Early Start of NFL Free Agency

1.) The QB Market is Ridiculous

Can somebody please tell me when all the QB contract madness is going to end? Good Lord. Sam Bradford just signed a 2 year 35 million dollar contract with 22 guaranteed for a guy who has played just 21 games the last three seasons due to injuries. Not only that, the Eagles gave Chase Daniel 3 years and 21 million with 12 million guaranteed. In his six NFL seasons, he has thrown just 77 passes and one touchdown. That’s crazy for a NFL backup that people questioned whether he would make it in the league due to his small size. Then we have the big one of Brock Osweiler getting 72 million over 4 years with 37 guaranteed.

That’s a lot of money for a guy who started just seven NFL games and was benched in the last one for the aging Peyton Manning. These QB contracts are getting out of hand for guys who have proven nothing. In comparison, Marcus Mariota has a four year 24 million dollar contract as the number two pick. A career NFL backup for six seasons is getting more money than one of the top franchise QBs. I’m waiting for teams to learn that the backup QB market is out of hand and for teams to start stashing second and third round QBs. I know a team like Dallas got punished for not having a good backup, but a day two pick backup such as a Brock Osweiler or Jimmy Garoppolo will give your franchise a young QB for four years that only costs you about a million a year. That’s now six million not tied up to a backup that you can spend elsewhere. Plus you can always use them as trade asset for needy teams.
