5. Marlon Byrd: Outfielder
If Jackson does not end up in Cleveland, Byrd could end up being an option to play some corner outfield. Byrd is 38, but hit 23 home runs in 2015. He did so while playing right and left field in the National League. He played 88 games in left field at the start of 2015 with the Reds and then played 37 games in right field for the Giants after being traded from Cincinnati.
Two options make sense for Byrd in Cleveland. The first is to fill in at left field for Brantley while he’s injured. The other is to be a platoon right fielder with Chisenhall. Lonnie could face right-handed pitching, Marlon could face lefties.
Despite his age, Byrd has hit at least 20 home runs in three straight seasons. He wouldn’t be a first choice to fill in an outfield position, but he is near the top of the list of remaining free-agents.
We’ll see if the Tribe adds any of these five players between now and April.
