4. Jimmy Rollins: Shortstop
If the Desmond option doesn’t intrigue the Tribe, another option at backup shortstop would be the three-time All-Star and 2007 MVP, Rollins. Obviously, those days are long gone, but his knowledge of the game has only grown in his 15 seasons.
There are few shortstops currently active in MLB that could serve as a better mentor to Lindor than Rollins.
Maybe Rollins only plays on occasion, but he’s a switch-hitter, who contributed to the Dodgers in 2015, playing in 144 games. In fact, the 37-year-old has played in at least 140 games in each of the last five seasons and has played at least 130 games in 14 of his 15 years in the league.
Similar to the possibility of signing Desmond, it would depend upon Tito’s trust in Ramirez. It’s not a knock on the young utility infielder, but Rollins brings a baseball IQ and consistent track record that Ramirez has not shown up to this point.
Rollins is an ideal candidate to look for on a team in the postseason, due to his veteran leadership and his experience, which includes winning a World Series ring the year after he was named the Most Valuable Player of the National League.
