4. Arron Afflalo SG/SF
Assuming the Cavs move Iman Shumpert, which they have been trying to do for quite some time and are especially active this summer, they’ll be looking for another solid wing off the bench.
Afflalo is a solid two-way player who can hit open threes and would be able to match up with guys like Shaun Livingston, Andre Iguodala and Klay Thompson for brief stretches of time.
If the Cavs suffer an injury to J.R. Smith or Kyle Korver, Afflalo is a dependable veteran who would be able to handle the duties of a starting SG, especially if he’s surrounded by three (or more) All-Stars.
The 31-year-old is coming off a year in which he was paid $12.5 million by the Sacramento Kings, who realized that was an absurd contract and waived him last week.
Afflalo could still make close to that money on rebuilding teams with significant room to spend, so the Cavs would have to hope he’s willing to take a one year minimum contract, help them compete for a championship and then cash in after showing what he can do when surrounded by great players.
Looking at Afflalo’ s track record, he’s been one of the more consistently solid players on bad teams.
Since 2011-2012, Afflalo has made roughly $50 million total over the last six seasons.
It’d be understandable if he wants to take the most money he can get, but if he were to take the league minimum in Cleveland, the opportunities created by being surrounded by LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love and the Cavs’ strong core could net him a lucrative deal in 2018.
