3. Tony Allen SG
Allen is on the back end of his career, but he’s still one of the better perimeter and on-ball defenders in the league and Cleveland’s need to step up on that end of the floor was evident in the 2017 Finals against Golden State.
At 35 years old, he could be a candidate to accept the league minimum to try to grab a ring. We all know LeBron loves the movie trilogy The Godfather, but bringing Allen (known to his beloved fans in Memphis as “the Grindfather”) to Cleveland would give the Cavs something LeBron and everyone else on the roster would love: grit, defense and toughness – all of which the Cavs could have used more of in the 2017 Finals.
One of the dilemmas the Cavs would have by acquiring Allen is there would be somewhat of a logjam at shooting guard. At 6-foot-4, it’d be a tall task to have Allen on Durant, but he could handle guys like Thompson, Livingston and possibly be used to guard Steph Curry.
If the Cavs were to sign Allen, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of moving Kyle Korver after he becomes trade-eligible and trying to find other younger role players to round out the bench.
