A rear naked choke in the fifth and final round was enough for Miesha Tate to upset Holly Holm in UFC 196, taking home the title at the 3:30 mark of round five to become the new undisputed UFC Bantomweight Women’s championship.
e”I knew I had to play it patient and find the perfect moment,” Tate said. “I knew I had to finish the fight, I had to have a perfect round, I knew the fifth round was important.”
It was a fight that went back and forth, but after a takedown by Tate in round two, Holm was able to take control, and had the fight won if she would have been able to finish the fight, but it was not to be.
“I had to be a pitbull on a bone, she went out like a champion,” Tate said.
The UFC stands to be in an interesting situation, as everyone felt it would be Holm and ex-champion Rounda Rousey this summer in the biggest UFC rematch of all-time, but now with Tate with the championship, Rousey may have to wait for a rematch between Tate and Holm before she gets her rematch.
Tate is the 3rd UFC Bantomweight Women’s champion, and her 7th career win.
