4.) Cut Players You Don’t Need
This is one area we have seen the Browns start to excel in already. The team has cut Randy Starks and Jim Dray this month. Johnny Manziel is on his way out as soon as possible too. Other players like Dwayne Bowe, Armonty Bryant, Desmond Bryant, Justin Gilbert, Josh Gordon, Brian Hartline, Andrew Hawkins, and Paul Kruger are all on the border too. Simply put, the Browns should get rid of whoever they don’t need whether that’s due to personal problems, attitude, or contract situations.
The team is in rebuilding mode so it’s time to get rid of players whose attitude problems brought the team and locker room down. It’s also time to get rid of contracts that don’t make sense and the team can save some money and use it towards other players going forward. There are a lot of young players that I would like to see play and see what they have. We have two high draft pick pass rushers in Barkevious Mingo and Nate Orchard but I barely saw either last year.
First round pick Danny Shelton who’s supposed to be a big run stopper didn’t play a ton of snaps. Xavier Cooper, a third round pick on a defense that struggled wasn’t in the rotation much either. I’d love to see Horton use some of the young guys how they should be used unlike Jim O’Neil did. Cut some of the guys who haven’t performed and led the defense to be towards the bottom and see what the young guys can do. If they succeed great, if not you can look to next offseason to improve those areas when you have an idea of what people can and can’t do and you add another year of talent to the team. The whole roster needs an identity change and Hue Jackson is the perfect coach for it. I expect some of these players to perform much better this year even if the team as a whole struggles.
