With the ‘second half’ of the Cavs season kicking off tonight, our staff here at NEO Sports Insiders took some time to answer some questions about how they think the second half of the year will go for the Cavs.
In your opinion, have the Cavs underachieved, overachieved or are they right where they should be as they begin the second half?
Matt Medley: The Cavs have underachieved in my opinion because of inexcusable losses to bad teams like Portland, Charlotte, and New Orleans to name a few. One might say that happens to all teams, but it has not been a problem for the two best teams in the West. The Cavs’ 0-2 record vs the Bulls and their 1-3 record vs San Antonio and Golden State is troubling.
It’s hard to say a team overachieved or is where they need to be when we are less than a month removed from firing the head coach mid-season. Still a ways to go, but there is enough time to get there if they use it wisely.
Eddy Jansen: Depends on what end of the floor you are talking about. Offensively, they’ve been good enough to win the East, but could still be better. Kyrie Irving’s assist numbers are still pretty low, which suggests he is involved in mostly isolation plays. If he creates more shots for his teammates, the Cavs could have the top offense in the NBA behind Golden State.
Adrienne Goehler: Underachieved. The record isn’t everything here. The play was mostly inconsistent in the first half and the inability to close out some close games and get a big win was a bit concerning and quite the let down. The team is far too talented to let that stand in their way. Injuries aside, the lack of focus and selfish way of playing at times got in the way of a better first half.
