1 – Jon Jones may be one step closer to a rematch with the only man who truly challenged him in the cage.
A light heavyweight bout between former UFC Light Heavyweight Championship challengers Alexander Gustafsson and Glover Teixeira served as the main event and saw Gustafsson dominate Texeira for four rounds before knocking him out early into the fifth. As we know, Jones is set to fight Daniel (DC) Cormier at the end of July.
No matter what, win lose or draw, I think it is a safe bet we see the long-awaited rematch between Jones and Gustafsson to follow. Will it be for the light heavyweight title or not, remains the only question. Gustafsson more than earned himself a rematch with the best pound for pound fighter in the world with yesterday morning’s showing over Texeira.
The Light Heavyweight Division is very top-heavy right now and not many clear number one contenders remain after the retirement of Anthony Rumble Johnson. Jimi Manuwa has been begging for a shot at DC, but when you look at it, he lost to Gustafsson and really doesn’t have the resume to claim he is the number one contender. If the UFC opts for the “money fight” like they have been known to do in the past, then you can “bank” on Jones vs Gustafsson II is not that far away.
For Gustafsson, he will hope that is for championship gold, however, no matter the outcome of his fight with DC, I’m sure a fight with Jones will be on the radar of everyone. Many feel that Gustafsson won their last meeting at UFC 165 in September of 2013.
Again, that was four years ago and Gustafsson is a meager 3-2 since, while Jones has been in out and of the sport since with suspensions. Time will tell, but one thing for sure, Gustafsson did himself a big favor with the win yesterday.
