2017 Cleveland Browns Defensive Overview: Who’s Locked In For Starting Jobs? What Spots Are Up For Grabs?

Special Teams

Rookie Zane Gonzalez was drafted in the seventh round and he’ll play right away. He set a FBS record, converting 82.7 percent of his kicks at Arizona State. He was 7-of-9 from 50 yards or more.

Punter Britton Colquitt signed a four-year deal this offseason, putting up his best net average since 2012. Charley Hughlett signed an offseason deal to become the league’s highest paid long snapper.

As mentioned in the offense preview, wide receiver Mario Alford could be interesting to watch in the kick return game. He averaged 23.8 yards per return at the end of the year, and there are few options to take the job from him.

Duke Johnson returned 17 punts last year; expect Jabrill Peppers to take that job away. In three years, Peppers returned 39 punts, including 21 in 2016.
