26.) Value Defenses Over Kickers
In terms of the two non-glamor positions in fantasy football, value defenses over kickers. As mentioned, kickers can have good days and bad days and there is usually no correlation as to which it will be. All their opportunities come down to one play that may or may not happen. Defenses typically will play about half of the game. With a lot of time on the field and a better feel of how they fare against the opposing offense, defense should be the first pick off the two. Consistency is key.
27.) Have A Keeper Defense
If possible, I like to take what I call a keeper defense for the season. My keeper defense is one that I will keep all year and should be towards the top of the league. As I mentioned, defenses tend to be pretty consistent for the most part so getting a good defense over a depth position player makes a lot of sense especially if you can land a top five defense. Having that one good defense you can throw out almost any week is an ace in the hole.
28.) Use Two Defenses For Tough Matchups
However when it comes to defenses I love playing the matchup more than anything. I don’t care how good your defense is, when you play teams like New England, Green Bay, or Carolina your defense is going to take a hit. Some offenses are just almost impossible to stop. When your main defense is in that situation I always like having a second defense to bail me out. Looking ahead is important too. If my primary defense has some easy matchups for a couple weeks, I may go with one defense and add another position player. If my primary defense has New England and Pittsburgh in back to back week, chances are I will scour the waivers for a team that plays a weak opponent in back to back weeks. While most might be inclined to start the Seahawks defense against Arizona, if I have the opportunity to pick up the Jaguars playing the Titans I might start them instead. Bad offenses usually promote turnovers and score fewer points. Allowing a lot of yards or points is what hurts defensive scoring so finding worse offenses can be better than finding good defenses.
