The first two innings went well for the Indians as they built a 7-0 lead, but a forgettable 6th inning doomed the Tribe in a 13-7 loss to the Royals.
The barrage of runs by the Royals in the 6th and then five more in the 9th came off relievers Brooks Pounders, RC Orlan and Asher Wojcichowski.
On a positive note the offense got going early, as they scored four in the first on RBI’s by Carlos Santana and Yu Chang, and then a two-run triple by Trayce Thompson.
The Tribe plated three more in the 2nd inning, a solo homer from Leonys Martin and a 2-run shot by Santana, who is now hitting .385 with 7 RBI this spring.
Another plus was a couple at bats by Jason Kipnis, who was playing in just his second game of the spring.
Kipnis went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and runs scored in his second game of the spring and first since February 24th.
Sam Hentges was sharp of his 2.0-inning start as Tyler Clippard, Nick Goody and Cody Anderson all threw scoreless ball in their spring debuts.
Jon Edwards and Oliver Perez also tossed scoreless outings before the wheels came off in the 6th.
Oddly enough, the winning pitcher for the Royals was Kyle Zimmer, the older brother of Indians outfielder Bradley Zimmer.
The Indians will travel to Peoria, AZ to take on San Diego Padres at 3:05pm Monday.
Shane Bieber makes his second start of the spring against Lefty Joey Lucchesi for the Friars. The game will be televised on SportsTIme Ohio.
