CLEVELAND, Ohio- Good news for soccer fans, as FirstEnergy Stadium was chosen as one of the host cities for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The CONCACAF is the official national team tournament in the region involving North America, South America and the Caribbean. Out of thirteen venues, Cleveland is one of the four first-time hosts. Cleveland will hold group stage play involving the United States Men’s National Team on July 15. FirstEnergy Stadium will hold the final game of the United States’ group play as well as another game between two other Gold Cup teams.
Jimmy and Dee Haslam released a statement about the exciting news for Cleveland.
“When planning the FirstEnergy Stadium modernization project with the City of Cleveland, our primary goals were to provide the best possible experience for our fans throughout the year and to help continue to show the world how great our city is through the ability to host high-profile concerts and sporting events. Along with the City of Cleveland and Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, we are excited to be named a host venue for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup and to welcome the participating teams, tournament officials and the many fans representing many countries in our region to Cleveland.”
David Gilbert, the president and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission had this to say on the announcement.
“We are incredibly proud and excited that Cleveland has been chosen as a host site for 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. This opportunity affords Northeast Ohio the ability to play a role in an event that draws tens of thousands of spectators. Due to the invaluable partnerships with the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Browns and Columbus Crew, we will be able to show the world Cleveland’s passion for soccer.”
Mayor Frank Jackson also added his thoughts.
“After a successful summer with the Cavaliers’ championship, the Indians’ championship, the Monsters’ championship and the Republican National Convention, we want to take this opportunity to welcome all soccer fans to Cleveland.”
